DRIHM Snaps: Integrating package management with provenance tracking

Background
The underlying premise of the DRIHM project is that understanding and predicting the environmental and human impact of draughts, floods, landslides and other severe hydro-meteorological events requires a holistic approach. Numerous physical, chemical and biological simulations and datasets describing different aspects of climate change, infrastructure development or land use need to be combined in a way that takes into account interactions between various subsystems. DRIHM provides such an integrated environmental modeling solution, merging collections of several models (in various versions) and numerous data sources (of often unknown provenance) into scientific simulation workflows. However, successful simulations deeply depend on combining the right versions of models with the right data in the right environment. Consequently, for reproducible simulations, DRIHM needs to provide an adequate package management system and a provenance tracking system coupled with it. This system is called DRIHM Snaps.

Objectives
The objectives of this thesis are fourfold. Firstly, a basic set of requirements for DRIHM Snaps should be identified. The DRIHMS White Paper can be consulted for this step. Secondly, the current DRIHM repository should be analyzed critically against the requirements and migrated to the Paludis Package Management System. Thirdly, based on the requirements, the Sumatra Provenance Tracking System shall be adapted to the DRIHM environment -- with Paludis as package management system. Note that steps 2 and 3 will most probably require code adjustments. Finally, the functionality of DRIHM Snaps has to be demonstrated and described in a manual-type format.
