Mitigating Web Tracking

Background
"In the information realm, loss of privacy is usually associated with failure to control access to information, to control the flow of information, or to control the purposes for which information is employed." (C. Dwork, CACM 54(1), 2011) In this context, Web tracking is a typical mechanism to annul privacy. In a recent study Acar et al. presented a large-scale analysis of three advanced Web tracking mechanisms in the wild.

Objectives
In this thesis we want to reproduce some of Acar's results, propose a mitigation technique, and prototypically implement and evaluate these mechanisms against pre-determined metrics. Consequently, the thesis has several parts: define the metrics, redo Acar's assessments (for the Münchner Wissenschaftsnetz), install and evaluate the suitability of PriVaricator, a tool to break linkability, propose an easy-to-use solution. The solution needs to be demonstrated.
